Book Review: A Streetcar Named Desire

Hello Lovelies,

This past semester, I enrolled in an American Literature course. I really enjoyed the books we were required to read and, since I review books that I read on Goodreads, I decided I would do one here as well. I like more... friendly, laid-back? Here we go!

Summary from Goodsreads:
Blanche DuBois arrives at her sister Stella's New Orleans apartment seeking refuge from a troubled past but her ethereal spirit irks Stella's husband, the loutish Stanley Kowalski. Crudely, relentlessly, he unmasks the lies and delusions that sustain Blanche, until her frail hold on reality is shockingly severed.

A Streetcar Named Desire was written by Tennessee Williams in the 1940s. It's a play that became very popular, both on stage and in the theatres.

Marlon Brando, circa 1951 anybody??
Now, having to read this for a literature course, I had to really analyze a lot of different themes and aspects of this play. Imagination, realism/fantasy, animalism, and masculinity. Pheww.

Even so, though I really enjoyed this play. The characters are so intricate, even if you have to dig a lot bit. While reading, I felt like I could relate to the issues some characters faced - sympathy and empathy. Can we say love triangle, but not really? It's got a twist, but I won't spoil it for you! If you enjoy classics, I highly recommend this to you!

Rating: 4/5 - Worth the read.

Tip to self: Watch the movie!

Limiting Processed Foods

Hello Lovelies,

Since I've been off the college meal plan system, I've been thoroughly enjoying the ability to make my own food. Just last night, I made chili from scratch:

Mmm, nothing but dry beans, tomatoes, spices, and water in that (save for the macaroni). And it is delicious.

I've been really considering cutting out most of the processed food that Mister and I eat. I even turned down toaster waffles at Food Lion. Agh.

Of course... I don't expect for this plan to be perfect. I still plan to eat my "veggie" meat substitues that are really no more than infused soy and spice. Oh, and candy. I'm surrounded by leftover Halloween candy and... Lets just say, I can't resist.

But I'm going to try! Is anyone else trying to slowly give up the processed poo we call food? Share with me!

Oh, Sickness, Wherefore Art Thou?

Hello Lovelies,

I've officially come down with a lovely first allergy/cold/head thing of the season. It's not that fun, believe me. I've got all the sniffly, sneezey,... Wait, I didn't buy Nyquil - I got off-brand! I'm trucking through!

On account of such, it's freezing outside! Or, at least as much as it would feel when the realm of nature desides to skip fall and delve straight into winter. I haven't even gotten a pumpkin yet (does butternut count?). Is anyone else obbbbsessed with pinterest right now? I'm definitely going to be digging me some barley soup. Amirite? With them hole-ripped jeansss, boots with the furrrrr, the whole campus lookin at herrr. Amirite?

Whosy-doosel, I'd like to leave with a thought: Does striving for something that many people warn against mean you're determined to achieve or desparate to prove wrong? Hm.

Thoughtful Tuesday

Hello Loves,

I write this in preparation for my long travel back to school tomorrow. It won't be bad; in fact, it will be productive. I'm getting a washer/dryer! (Adult excitement, anyone?). Even though I'll be leaving the small town feel of burning leaves and smoking tobacco, I'm looking forward to returning to city school and all of it's components, even if I really get bored in a few classes and the trucks are far too "tricked out".

It's definitely fall and I love it, though I don't love the sudden obsession with pumpkin. I'm so excited for soup season! Chilies and veggies and beans - oh my! I wonder if I could get my hands on some quinoa or barley? hmm.. This month also marks the 3 year anniversary of my disownment of meat. I suppose that's something to be excited about.

I'm setting a few goals. I'd love to get back into documenting my food intake with MyFitnessPal and want to decorate my apartment, actually getting the stupid thing organized and neat - ugh!

Side Note of the Day - Does anyone actually use Etsy? I've been thinking of setting up an inventory and a shop. I do adore crafts and sewing, so why not?

College Tips: Shared Bathrooms

Most universities have a shower and/or bathroom that you have to share with at least one person, if not your entire floor. To be blunt, get over it. To be nice, you honestly will get used to it and it's not that bad. Everyone else is using the bathroom and is having the same concerns you are. I'd like to go over some of the common questions and worries that new students have, and hopefully give you some good tips (and tricks?).

1. "What are dorm bathrooms like? Will I be naked in front of everyone?"

It honestly depends on your school. Some colleges have dorms that only put 2 people to a room with a private bathroom, whereas some have apartment-like setups and you share a bathroom with your roommates (4 to an apartment). However, the shower setup I had was 2 bathrooms shared by the entire floor. Each bathroom had 4 toilet stalls and 4 shower stalls and some sinks on either side. The toilet side was a kind of standard public bathroom setup: some stalls, some sinks, some mirrors. The shower side would differ from dorm to dorm. Mine had curtained stalls, whereas others had doored stalls. That's pretty much standard to most schools. You are not naked in from of everyone, unless you just choose to be.

Also, most bathrooms are gender-specific. So only guys or only girls.

2. "What should I take with me to the bathroom? How should *I* go to the bathroom/shower?"

Most people know they need  a shower caddy. What kind you have is totally up to you and they are sold everywhere, especially right before school starts. I got a $1 one from Dollar Tree, but you can get really nice ones from other places like Walmart, Target, and even Bed Bath and Beyond. You put your crap in that. Shampoo, conditioner, body wash, razor, just whatever you use in the shower. I would even take my toothbrush with me so I didn't have to go all the way back to the bathroom to brush my mouth bones.

Now, how you go to the showers is, again, up to you and your own personal comfort level. I saw many a girl and guy go to the showers in a towel or bathrobe, which is fine. I would go with minimal clothing (like no bra and socks and other unnecessary things). For most of the year, I'd simply get in the shower and take my clothes off behind the curtain and hang them over the rod. After I got clean, I'd wrap up in a towel and grab my things and walk back to my room. No biggie!

Also, DO NOT FORGET THE FLIPPY FLOPPIES. You don't want any athlete's foot.

3. "Will people judge me?"

Totally not. Everyone goes to the bathroom for a specific purpose. No one wants to walk in there and generate a load of gossip about the mysterious person in the shower, because, seriously, most people don't know who is in the shower unless you already know the person's towel colors. Only people that deserve to be judged are, like if you're overly loud or you stink up the entire room with your poop smell.

4. "I'm really shy and I'm afraid of being naked around other people."

That's totally understandable. Most people don't want to be naked in front of others. Honestly, no one really wants to oogle at others (unless you do, that's cool). Like I said, most people go to the bathroom for one reason and that's why they're there. If there are others in the bathroom, they are thinking the same thing as you are. Everyone is just as unnerved by a new bathroom setup as you are. No one will bother you  and if they do, talk to your RA to fix it, because that person is weird.

Also, don't forget that you'll probably meet a lot of people on your floor and even become friends with some. I even sang a duet with one girl on my floor because I knew her from one of my classes. You will get used to your bathroom!

5. "What if the bathroom gets really crowded? Do I need to wait my turn?"

This can definitely be a problem with some bigger schools, but it can be adjusted to. Sometimes, yeah, you might have to wait for a stall. I'm a night showerer and even then there were a handful of times throughout the year where I had to wait my turn. Luckily, my room was right next to the bathroom so I could just hear when the stalls were taken or free. I think more people tend to shower in the morning. The best way to combat a crowd is to avoid it! It will depend on your personal schedule, but I bet no one has the same one. Try showering at a different time (morning instead of night, vice versa) or going in a bit earlier or later. Try learning the busy times when the bathroom is most full and plan around it, like brush your teeth and do your face wash at the sink before your shower, or something like that.

What is to Come??

Hello Lovelies!

I've finally compiled a set of topics that I'd like to prepare for the near future. The posts may, of course, vary and change or go completely out of order. I guess I will play it by ear!

The first idea I had was a weekly(ish) post for nail polish, aka Nail Polishes of the Week. These would highlight which nail polishes I was enjoying for the week and which I might not have enjoyed. I like this idea because, honestly, we tend to change our nail polishes a lot! I think the would be a nice addition to any regular post, as well, since it could certainly be brief.

Another idea that I am very much excited to do is a Video-Tips series for College Freshman. I plan on covering topics such as living with dorm showers, what to really expect from class, roommates, and/or other ideas. I'm still trying to complete all of the details, so I shall leave this as is.

To relate to my current life situations, I really want to talk about First Apartment Tips (for college-towns). I am by no means an expert on this since I literally have no long-term experience. I still think it would be useful for persons similar to me - college students getting out of the dorm life for the first time. Eh, eh?

I'm also passionate about a few cooking items and maybe even beauty.

What do you think?

Let's Talk About Them GOALS

Greetings Lovelies!

As a first blog post, I’m honestly not to positive what to gabber about. I’ve decided to make this a post about goals - for this page! I could not begin to count the accounts I have on social websites nor the blogs I have started but never completed or stuck with. I want this one to be different. Here, I want to post at least twice a week.

I have a handful of post ideas up my sleeves (or rather, not!). I’d like to cover topics like First-Time College Freshman, New Apartment Updates, a smidge of foodiness, and  perhaps a bit of myself. Let’s make one of my goals to become a part of a community.

Will you help me stick to this? Do you have any ideas for something you want to see?
